Governor Ige signed the following sustainability bills into law:

HB 1986, Relating to the Environment — Creates a framework for a carbon offset program that allows for carbon credits through California’s system or other global carbon sequestration protocols
HB 2106, Relating to Environmental Protection — Requires sea level rise analysis in environmental impact statements before building projects.
HB 2182, Relating to Environmental Protection — Makes Hawaiʻi carbon neutral by 2045 and establishes the Greenhouse Gas Sequestration Task Force

Hawaiʻi is the first and only state so far to have a 100% renewable portfolio standard and to be committed by law to the principles of the Paris Agreement. We are well on our way to meeting our RPS target and we are currently meeting our share of the US emissions goal under the Paris Agreement. This bill to go carbon neutral by 2045 will tie together these efforts – clean energy and emissions reductions – into one that focuses on decarbonizing our economy and restoring our native habitat through carbon offsets to do reforestation and carbon farming.
